Catastrophic Risk: Breaking the Cascades of Climate Risks Report
Current climate models underestimate the cascading risks of climate change. Existing solutions are often siloed, fragmented, and fail to address the systemic nature of these threats.
This is why we created the Climate Emergencies Resilience Lab (CERL), in partnership with Renaissance Philanthropy, to generate bankable, rapidly implementable solutions that intervene across multiple human systems simultaneously.

Why We Need CERL
Climate hazards are not isolated events. A drought can trigger a food crisis, leading to a health emergency and economic instability. These "reverberating ripples" are often ignored by traditional approaches. CERL was created to address this gap, moving beyond single-issue interventions and enabling us to build systemic resilience.
Our Approach + Opportunity Spaces
Through our initial research, we have identified and triaged 60 opportunity areas into 10, a mix of high-impact ventures, non-profits, and research directions. A snippet of these is below:
- Forest restoration: Scaling up efforts in high-risk regions by combining novel market mechanisms with advanced technology to address both demand and supply.
- Disease biosecurity: Developing scalable and anticipatory solutions for climate-induced disease outbreaks, including distributed sensing and intelligent systems.
- Zoonotic spillover: Building commercially viable ventures that expand and accelerate outbreak response, including neglected strategies like livestock feed-based DNA vaccines.
- Urban cooling: Creating solutions to protect the 1.2 billion people exposed to health risks in urban heat islands.
